REFLECTIONS Due October 8th :

For those of you who may be unfamiliar with "Reflections," it is a nationwide arts recognition and achievement program in which all of our students here at Monarch Elementary are eligible to participate. Although the program does follow a 'contest' format, the main goal of the program is participation, not winning! It gives every student the opportunity to create a work of art based on a specific theme and to feel good about it.
This year's theme is "The Magic of a Moment" and there are six arts areas in which students may participate:
     - Literature
     - Musical Composition
     - Photography
     - Visual Arts
     - Dance Choreography
     -Film/Video Production
Students are divided and judged in two different age groups:
     - K-2
     - 3-5
We would like to encourage EVERY student to enter as many times as they would like!! We will be offering a variety of incentives & prizes for students and classrooms that participate!! ALL entries are DUE Monday October 8th. We will be in the atrium of the school during the morning for the students to submit their Reflections projects.  For the program rules and entry forms please see the link on the school web site.
If you have any questions at all please feel free to contact either Milana Parsons: milana55@bellsouth.net or Nancy Roy: Nroy107@cs.com
Thanks so much! We are looking forward to seeing all the great work of art!!

CONGRATULATIONS!!!  We are at 100% for PTA MEMBERSHIP.  Thank you to everyone who joined!!

School Store

The school store opened to great success! The store will be open every Friday  from 7:15-7:50am.    Items range in price from .10 to $4.00.  The school store will also carry school magnets.  We are looking for colorful iPad chargers and will keep you updated once we have those available.  We want to make sure we have them at a reasonable cost.

Gently Used Books Needed
Mrs. White, our Instructional Coach, has asked for families to turn in any gently used books.  Our hope is to outfit reading centers in each of the classrooms.  There are many first year teachers at Monarch and this is a great way to help out in their classrooms.  Any and every level of book is greatly appreciated.

Shoparoo App:
This is a new opportunity for our school to raise funds without doing much.  Read below:
  • Shoparoo is a free app for smart phones and tablets that lets anyone turn pictures of shopping receipts into donations to your school.
  • With Shoparoo, every grocery receipt - regardless of the store or products purchased - earns money for your school.
  • It's similar to other widely adopted box top and label collection programs, but with much less work involved. With Shoparoo, there's no collecting, tracking, mailing, or shipping. In fact, you don't even need a coordinator. (Though Shoparoo is most effective when you mention it alongside your school's existing fundraisers.)
  • Finally, it's private. There's no need for parents to provide sensitive information such as their name, address, bank account numbers, credit card numbers, etcetera.
In addition, they'll guarantee a minimum donation to your school of $1 per parent who downloads the app and declares your school as their cause by September 30th, 2012.  No strings attached!  For more information please visit : http://www.shoparoo.com/schools.html

Boosterthon:

Change in Run Date - Oct. 26th

Mark you calendars for our number one fundraiser of the year.  Boosterthon will kick-off October 15th and culminate with the FUN RUN on October 26th.  This year's theme is Highway USA, "on the road to good choices."  Boosterthon Fun Run students will be “on the road to good choices.” On the road of life, students will be faced with a lot of choices to make, and Highway USA teaches them to make the choices that count. Highway USA will crisscross our students all over America, visiting cities and landmarks, and learning about five historical leaders who made the right choice at one time in their lives.  The historical leaders are: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Edison, Glenn Cunningham and Amelia Earhart.

SEED STORE
The 4K Class will be making a Seed Store as part of a Fall Farming unit in October. We could use the following items for our Dramatic Play area!
Plastic flowers, water cans, seed packets, flower/gardening magazines, plastic vases; order/receipt books; plastic pots; baskets. Thanks so much! I'll post pictures!  Please send items to Mrs. Riley Grant - K4.

Box Tops due Oct. 12th
Attention Monarch Families…Save your Box Tops!!

We are kicking off the new school year with a Box Top contest. The top two students in the school who bring in the most Box Tops will each receive a $25 gift card to the place of their choice. The contest will end on Friday, October 12. Please make sure your Box Tops are cut on the dotted line and are not expired.  Don’t forget to include your child’s name and teacher’s name on the bag. Remember to ask friends and relatives to save their Box Tops.

Special thanks to the following Monarch supporters:

-Twisted Cup has graciously given each Monarch Elementary student a gift certificate for a free 7oz. yogurt for their birthday!  The teachers will distribute these on the birthdays.  A HUGE thank you to Twisted Cup for making our students feel special on their special day!!

-Marilyn Knoblauch, RN, BS, CIC, spoke with kindergarten and first graders on germ prevention.  Ms. Knoblauch is an Infection Preventionist at Hillcrest Memorial Hospital.   Ms. Knoblauch was the first speaker in a series of doctors and nurses from Hillcrest Hospital to come and work with our students.

Dr. Christina Hernandez brought seven Clemson University nursing students to work with the Monarch third graders on healthy fast food choices.  These nurses demonstrated what happens to our bodies when we eat unhealthy foods.  These nurses will be back in October to work with Ms. Bowman.
